ART III: DIGITAL ART AND MEDIA - VA026 (ART3EM)

Prerequisite: Digital Art and Media I
This course is designed for students who have completed Digital Art and Media 2 and want to continue their study of 2D computer graphics. Digital Art and Media 3 builds upon the foundation skills taught in the Digital Art and Media 2 course, and provides opportunities for students to apply knowledge of contemporary visual are and design practices with greater depth and complexity. Students will be instructed in the use of professional drawing programs like Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop After Effects, LightWave, and ZBrush with much greater emphasis on individual conceptualization and development of the medium. Students must have previously demonstrated self-motivation and commitment to the field of computer graphics and be willing to put extra time and effort into developing good graphic techniques. Students will explore individual direction in the design and creation of original images for exhibitions, publications and personal portfolios. Students’ knowledge and practical manipulation of the principles of art will be expanded. Work produced on the computer can be included in the student’s AP Studio Art 2D Portfolio.
Art 3 Digital Art and Media

Students must have previously demonstrated self-motivation and commitment to the field of computer graphics and be willing to put extra time and effort into developing good graphic techniques. Students will explore individual direction in the design and creation of original images for exhibitions, publications and personal portfolios. Students’ knowledge and practical manipulation of the principles of art will be expanded. Work produced on the computer can be included in the students AP 2D Studio Art Portfolio.
Topic Outline (Possibilities)
-Further investigation of computer drawing and painting programs used in graphic design and animations.
-Advanced text basics (creating special effects with type)
-Application of the principles/elements of design
-Advanced work with composition techniques
-Properties of color
-Color and commercial printing techniques and tips
-Advanced techniques of image editing programs like Adobe Photoshop.
-Fabrication of various items such as logos, signs, illustrations for publications, advertising, product development, television and film graphics and animation.
-Techniques and topics that relate to computer-based animations
-Investigation of occupational opportunities
-Legal restrictions and copyright laws
The objective...To develop in students an intellectual, emotional and critical understanding of the commercial aspects of computer graphics, as well as traditional art, and to involve the student in the creative and technical processes of today's high-tech commercial art experience.
Students will begin developing work on a personal portfolio that will show proficiency in art and design concepts. Students will work for personal exhibitions, as well as developing work for practical applications. (i.e. publications such as the "Featherduster" and "Final Draft".)
Grading Procedures:
Each student will be given about five or six major assignments each nine weeks. Each assignment completed will be given a grade from 50-100.
60 %.........................Concept and Completion of the assignment
20 %..............................Craftsmanship and Effort
20 %..............................Skills and Development
In addition to project grades students will be given a weekly progress grade based on daily classroom/performance grade checks of student progress and effort. Each negative daily performance check is a minus 10 pts. (i.e. A student who does not receive any daily performance checks would get a 100 for the weekly grade. A student who had three performance checks in one week would get a 70 for the weekly grade).
Portfolio projects and major assignments will count 60%. Daily Grade/Weekly class participation will be 30%. All quizzes will count 10%.
Classroom procedures/rules:*
•Be on time.
•Announcements, instructions or demonstrations are at the beginning of the class period so avoid being tardy. After 5 minutes you will need a note from the Attendance Office. If you miss over half the class, you are considered absent.
•No Cell Phones in class unless instructed by the teacher.
•Do not leave the room for any reason unless you have my permission, or an administrator has called for you.
•Clean up after yourself and protect your equipment.
*Most of these applies only when in class and not Zoom meeting.
Make-up work, discipline policy, tardy and eligibility policies-can be found in the student handbook.

Westlake High School utilizes the Google Classroom platform to share classroom resources, many assignments, and assessment preparation materials to students. WHS students will receive a classroom code to access these materials, submit assignments, and track any missing work.
