Grade Distribution
Participation (50%)
Musical Progress and Achievement (30%)
Concert Report (20%)
Participation
Participation grade will be determined by the amount of time the student spends on-task, working in the practice room. Students should not use class time to socialize or study for other classes. Students should be alone in the practice room, unless permission is obtained to work in a collaborative manner. Students will check in with the teacher at the beginning of class before the tardy bell rings and again at the end of class before leaving.
Musical Progress and Achievement
Students will demonstrate musical achievement and progress throughout the semester, focusing on characteristic sounds, melodic and rhythmic accuracy, observance of key signatures, correct intonation, and appropriate dynamics and phrasing. Musical achievement and progress will be evaluated through performances, both for the class and for the teacher.
Concert Report
Students are required to attend one concert outside of Westlake High School each nine weeks and present to the class about the experience. These presentations will take place on the last week of each nine week grading period. A rubric will be provided for the presentation. A list of approved concerts can be found on the UT School of Music calendar at http://www.music.utexas.edu/calendar/. All other concerts must be approved by the teacher.
Final Exam
All students enrolled in Applied Music will perform a piece showcasing their work throughout the semester. Participation in this performance will count as the student's final exam grade.
Instrument, music, pencil, metronome, and other supplies required for maintenance of your specific instrument (valve oil, cork grease, etc.).
Westlake High School utilizes the Google Classroom platform to share classroom resources, many assignments, and assessment preparation materials to students. WHS students will receive a classroom code to access these materials, submit assignments, and track any missing work.
