Welcome to 5th Grade! My name is Laya Sharma, and I’m so thrilled to be your child’s Language Arts and Social Studies teacher this year. This is my third year at BCE, and I feel lucky to be part of such a great community.

A little about me: I have a Bachelor’s degree in Finance from the University of Wisconsin–Madison (Go Badgers!) and a Master’s degree in Finance from DePaul University. Though my background is rooted in numbers, I’ve always had a love for reading, writing, and history. I'm excited to bring both structure and creativity into our classroom as we explore stories, sharpen our writing skills, and dive into the events and people that have shaped our world.

Outside of school, I’m a proud parent of two amazing former Blue Jays! My older daughter, Arya, is a third-year at the University of Chicago. My younger daughter, Tiya, is a junior at Westlake High School. My husband, Raman, and I love spending time with them and our sweet lab-retriever mix, Oslo. When I’m not teaching, you’ll probably find me in the kitchen trying out a new recipe, curled up with a book, watching tennis (especially during the Grand Slams), or planning our next family trip.

I'm looking forward to a year full of curiosity, discovery, and fun! My goal is to help each student find their voice and develop a love for learning that lasts well beyond 5th grade. I can't wait to meet each of your amazing kids and see all that this year has in store for us!
