Note: Creative Writing and Literature Magazine are separate courses but for the 25-26 school year they are a combined 8th period class. The assignments for the two courses will differ and each course will have its own Google Classroom; however, there will be some crossover between the two classes.
Creative Writing I & II:
In this one-semester based workshop-style course, students will strengthen their ability to read, analyze, compose, and edit various types of imaginative writing. Students will study and critique numerous writing samples to gain a deeper understanding of the craft of writing and to refine their personal writing styles. Emphasis is placed on the class workshop environment. This will require students to share their work with the entire class, as well as smaller groups. Students will also be encouraged to participate in and submit their work to The Final Draft, WHS’s literary/fine arts magazine, and strongly encouraged to enter various writing competitions.
Literary Magazine:
This year-long course allows students to join the staff of The Final Draft, WHS’s award-winning literary and fine arts magazine. Working closely with each other and the faculty advisor, students new to the staff will develop—and returning students will hone—their skills in publishing the magazine. Skills include concept development, design and layout, submission selection and editing, digital photography, marketing strategies, desktop publishing, and the printing process. Students will assume the role of a specific editor, designer, or general member of the staff. The course culminates in the publication in the spring of The Final Draft. Permission of the instructor must be obtained to add or drop the course mid-year. This course can be taken for multiple years (LA194 for the 2nd year and LA195 for the 3rd year; students wanting a fourth year can can enroll in an independent study course.)
Westlake High School utilizes the Google Classroom platform to share classroom resources, many assignments, and assessment preparation materials to students. WHS students will receive a classroom code to access these materials, submit assignments, and track any missing work.
