STARBASE Edwards AFB

What is STARBASE?

STARBASE is a STEM program that was created by the Department of Defense (DoD) in 1991 and was originally called project STARS. Find more information on the national program visit the DoD STARBASE website: https://dodstarbase.org/about/STARBASE.

STARBASE is a 25-hour, five day, instructional program (Monday- Friday, from 9AM-2PM) for fifth grade students funded by the Department of Defense (DoD), that provides world class STEM instruction throughout the school year. All instruction is provided at no-cost; only transportation and sack lunches need to be provided for students attending. STARBASE Edwards is a unique opportunity for students because we are located on Edwards Air Force Base, which enables us to utilize world class equipment, bring in Air Force STEM experts as guest speakers, and take students on once in a lifetime Air Force Field Trips on base.

At STARBASE Edwards, we provide students with the opportunity to visit military-civilian facilities, engage with STEM community leaders, and explore the STEM field in a fun and engaging way. The STARBASE program gives in-depth instruction on many Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), Common Core State Standards (CCSS), Career and Technical Education Standards, and the Computer Science Standards for California Schools. Through these activities, students are engaged in experiences in which they learn from and with other people, and because of that, are encouraged to think critically, innovatively, and creatively.

Where Are We Located?

What Standards Are Taught During The Program?

We teach cross-curricular lessons at STARBASE, which means we teach to four major California State Standard sets; Common Core State Standards (CCSS), Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), the Computer Science Standards for California Schools (Computer Science), and the California Career and Technical Education (CTE) standards. Find details on all the standards in the corresponding databases linked below:

How Do I Express Interest In My School/District Attending STARBASE?

STARBASE currently works with 8 school districts across the greater Antelope Valley in California. We function as an instructional field trip for students during the school year (I.E., students come to us for five school days to get fun, engaging, STEM instruction that can't get anywhere else). We schedule for the next year during the Summer and are currently full for the 2023-2024 school year.

If you're interested in having your school or district attend STARBASE please fill out the interest form below. The interest form will put you on our waitlist. Also, we are planning on expanding soon! When we expand we will double our ability to support classes and be contacting many on the waitlist to schedule once we begin operation of our extra classroom.
