My name is Lisa Fernandes, I'm a First-Year B. Tech Bioengineering student pursuing my degree at D. Y. Patil International University. I'm a big fan of eyeliner, oxford commas, and everything pink.
Since my preteens, my interest in makeup and skincare has increased exponentially. Between battling awkward phases in puberty and the never-ending beauty standards for women, I found a safe space in makeup. It offered me a creative outlet– a way for me to express myself ( and to cover up that one zit I was conscious about).
A common misconception about makeup is that it makes one shallow, and is used to alter the things we don't like about our face. While that is true in some cases, it was the opposite for me. In order to figure out what cleanser to use, or which foundation shade I need, I have to analyze my natural features and understand what suits me best. I use skincare and makeup to enhance my natural features, features I'm not sure I would've grown to love so much if I hadn't stumbled into the beauty world.
However, there was still trouble brewing. The creative side of me was satiated by the fancy serums and colourful eyeshadows, but the scientific side of me was left wondering. I knew sunscreen was good for me, and that I should moisturize daily, but I still didn't know why. Quick google searches only lead me to sites with the bare minimum science. I get it, most people aren’t interested in reading paragraphs about cell interactions when they just want a moisturizer recommended to them. On the contrary, I would spend hours aggressively googling how the skin barrier works.
This burning curiosity (and an assignment from a professor in college) eventually led me to write this blog, which focuses more on in-depth explanations of how products work.
I appreciate the sites that recommend products with all my heart, but I also need a site telling me what in the world collagen is. To all my budding scientists in the beauty world out there–pissed they have to scour through research papers–this one is for you. Happy reading!
