Lyria will be unfolding for us her in-the-works research on a chapter titled 'Regulation beyond technology'. Here is a teaser:

The chapter looks at concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) and fairness as a case study to explore the limits of over-focussing on technological causes and solutions. It concludes with some thoughts on better starting places for governance of our ever-changing socio-technical landscape.

25th September 2026. Friday lunch meeting, TLC members discussed the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, 2019 (PECA), enforcement challenges, user behaviour, and regulatory interventions. With a focus on the portal to report violations. 

Following are some of the notable observations:

Criminalising vaping is creating a grey market for its sale. as opposed to decriminalising purchase and encouraging reporting. perhaps, this is so because the legislature was apprehensive of the executive having to facilitate rehabilitation and de-addiction campaigns. This may have been seen as a cost to the exchequer. In the present state, it may at least be promising to discourage usage by adding warnings on the PECA website such as "All users are advised that since they are dealing with a banned good, they will not receive the protection of consumer protection laws".

25th September 2026. Podcast recommendation (only if necessary) carrying important tips for legal professionals using AI to draft or research. Even if originality is given a pass, verification cannot be forgotten.

27th August 2026. The webinar brings together distinguished experts from practice and academia to discuss an emerging category of human rights – digital rights. Special attention will be devoted to the rights of the most vulnerable individuals, groups, and communities, including children, women, persons with disabilities, racial minorities, and Indigenous peoples. The participants will address the challenges of interpreting and realising fundamental rights in an increasingly digitalised environment.

24th August 2026. Pratik and Dolly from the TLC secure research internships with LTRG on their project titled 'AI in Traffic Violations Project'.

The School of Law is pleased to announce this Value Added Certificate Course in collaboration with GovernAI. Taught by Parishrut Jassal, Alvin Antony, and Maya Sherman, the course promises to be a decisive enquiry into the law on AI.

31st July 2026. Law and Technology Research Group at the Centre for the Study of Law and Governance (CSLG), JNU.

With  Dr Nupur Chowdhury, Dr Mandira Narain and Prabhat Mishra to discuss  liability and governance  nuances of automated traffic enforcement in India.  This paper is slated to be discussed at  the 2026 ALSA Law and Technology Conference.
