Drew Smith serves as Director of General Music and Choirs at Dwight Common School where his responsibilities include teaching General Music to grades Kindergarten, 1, 2, 3, 4 as well as teaching the Middle School Choirs.
Raised nearby in Wilmington, Illinois, he received a Bachelor's in Music Education with High Honors from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign where he studied under Barry Houser, Linda Moorhouse, J. Ashley Jarrell, Beth Peterson, and Mark Moore. During his collegiate years, he participated in every wind band offered including Campus Band, University Band, Hindsley Symphonic Band, Harding Symphonic Band, Illinois Wind Orchestra, Illinois Wind Symphony, Summer Band, Commencement Band, Basketball Band, and the Marching Illini.
During his time within the Marching Illini, Drew served as a section leader for two years in the baritone section. Some of the performances included the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Ireland (2014), Chicago Bears Halftime Shows (2012-2015), "It's On Us" campaign featuring Vice President Joe Biden (2015), and Macy's Thanksgiving Parade in New York City (2015).
Drew has participated in the Will County 4-H club (2001-2012), and served as several officer positions. He has been a member and president of Wilmington High School's Tri-M Music Honor Society. Drew is an active member of the National Association for Music Education and the National Band Association. He is an alumni member of Alpha Xi chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Men's Music Fraternity, and an alumni/founding member of the Nu Xi chapter of the Kappa Kappa Psi Band Fraternity. Drew is involved with the River Valley Wind Ensemble as a musician(2017-Current), the Kankakee Municipal Band (2018-Current) and the Wilmington Area Community Band as a musician and director(2007-Current). He is also the choir director at the First United Methodist Church of Wilmington (2021-Current).
