EduTalks
at Dwight School Dubai
at Dwight School Dubai
Thank you to parents who were able to join us for our EduTalk on Thursday, 4 September. We outlined the Assessment Journey at Dwight School Dubai and provided further details about our newly introduced GL Assessments. The presentation materials are now available for your reference here.
Key Takeaway: Assessment as a Learning Tool
The central message from our Assessment Journey at Dwight School Dubai is that assessment serves as a process for learning and a catalyst for growth - not merely a grading mechanism. When students do not utilise assessment as a tool for growth, its educational value remains unrealised.
Moving to GL Progress Tests has not resulted in a curriculum change in any phases. Our primary objective is to support our student's progression through the IB continuum: PYP, MYP and DP Programmes. Our assessment practices are designed to ensure this successful progression. While MAP assessments served a purpose, it did not fully align with the skills and knowledge needed for IB progression. In contrast, GL assessments directly reflect what we are already teaching, creating a more cohesive and meaningful evaluation system ensuring students are assessed with a focus on problem solving, reasoning and application of knowledge. These skills closely reflect the inquiry-based, concept-driven nature of the IB curriculum.
Key Takeaway: Feedback and Reflection
We encourage you to discuss assessment experience with your children upon completion and receiving feedback from their teacher. Consider exploring these thought provoking questions together:
What were you being assessed on?
What skills did you need for the assessment?
Where are you now with your learning?
What do you have to do next in your learning?
Where are you hoping to get to?
What do you have to do to get there?
Upper School Assessment Practice
In Upper School, students are encouraged to take their assessments home after receiving teacher feedback. This feedback, combined with your discussions at home, play a crucial role in fostering student growth and academic progress.
