Dawson-Boyd Physical Education Philosophy
Physical Education is an integral part of the total educational program of each student in our district. The ultimate aim of our Physical Education Program is to provide students with the skills necessary to live healthy, active lifestyles. Regular involvement in physical activity has been proven to increase test performance, raise self-esteem, reduce the incidence of life threatening disease and produce a positive impact on the social and emotional well-being of an individual. Through exposure to a wide variety of activities, students will gain the necessary knowledge to understand the importance of and make educated decisions around opportunities to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Our Dawson-Boyd School Physical Education Program is a well organized, sequential program that will allow the student to develop the skills necessary to build upon in later years. Students will progress a variety of units. Emphasis is on the skills necessary to participate in team sports-including kinesthetic and traditional sports skills as well as learning the rules and regulations of the various sports' activities along with keeping all kids active. These skills are presented through cooperative activities which promotes the students' ability to be a positive member of a team.
The Dawson-Boyd School District is committed to and supports the development of a positive and appropriate values driven education. Social skills which include but are not limited to respect, cooperation, communication, teamwork and sportsmanship are an important aspect of the Physical Education curriculum and will be directly taught throughout the student's school career.
Our goal is to create an array of enjoyable, challenging, and meaningful activities that will provide the building blocks necessary to prepare them for maintain a healthy lifestyle beyond the Physical Education class.
THE GOAL
The goal of physical education is to develop physically literate individuals who have the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity. To pursue a lifetime of healthful physical activity, a physically literate individual:
• Has learned the skills necessary to participate in a variety of physical activities.
• Knows the implications and the benefits of involvement in various types of physical activities.
• Participates regularly in physical activity.
• Is physically fit.
• Values physical activity and its contributions to a healthful lifestyle
THE STANDARDS
Standard 1. The physically literate individual demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns.
Standard 2. The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance.
Standard 3. The physically literate individual demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness.
Standard 4. The physically literate individual exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others.
Standard 5. The physically literate individual recognizes the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social interaction.
