Homework Begins!

Next Monday starts the beginning of homework for fourth graders. Students will be required to complete 1 hour of reading each week along with a reading log. We feel it is important to start with small tasks to give you and your child time to establish a routine for success at home. 

In class, we are working on reading volume and stamina. We are practicing reading more for longer periods of time. We are also working on how to choose a Just Right Book. A Just Right Book is one that requires the child to practice their reading skills. Students choose a book that meets that requirement by first finding one that interests them, choosing one they will want to read from start to finish, one they can read smoothly with expression.

Students are expected to read at least 1 hour each week and turn in their reading log on Fridays. Along with the 1 hour of reading, they should be completing 3 entries on their reading log. I hope the set-up of homework this year provides some flexibility and allows students to make a plan to complete their homework that is best for them (i.e., read each night for 15 minutes, read one night for an hour, or ready 2 nights for 30 minutes).
