The Youth Achievement Program is seeking volunteer Pre-HSE instructors to help youth and adult learners strengthen essential reading, writing, and math skills before they enter official High School Equivalency preparation. This is one of the most transformative roles in our program - you'll help learners rebuild confidence, fill long-standing skill gaps, and take their first steps toward a diploma.
• Work with learners who are building foundational literacy and numeracy skill
• Teach or reinforce basics: phonics, vocabulary, sentence writing, grammar, number sense, operations, and problem-solving
•Use structured, ready-to-go lessons and materials (no prep required)
• Provide patient, encouraging support to learners who may be returning to school after many years
• Collaborate with staff to track progress and celebrate milestones
Make a life-changing impact at the earliest stage of a learner's journey
Help students gain the confidence they need to move into HSE-level classes
Receive training, curriculum, and ongoing support
Contribute to educational equity and opportunity in Durham and Orange County

Patient, encouraging, and comfortable breaking down concepts step-by-step
Confident with basic reading, language, writing, and math skills
Open to learning simple instructional strategies for adult and youth learners

Ready to support learners who may feel nervous, discouraged, or out of practice
No teaching experience needed - just empahy and consistency.
