Welcome to 501!

Welcome to my space of out of this world thoughts and ideas!

My classroom is located in a small rural community located in southeast Duplin County. Many of my student are part of families who have farmed for generations. The ways of farming are changing and many kids today are not aware of the career opportunities emerging in our changing society. It is my hope with the platform "Chicken Nuggets on Mars" to get students interested in agriculture and STEM careers.

I hope you will continue to visit my page throughout the 2019-2020 school year to keep up to date on how my kids are incorporating agriculture and STEM into their investigation of one day getting chickens to Mars!

This project has been made possible by Dr. Koci and Dr. Davis at NC State, NIFA (National Institute of Food and Agriculture), and NC Farm Bureau Ag in the Classroom.

Check out some of the photos from our first week of professional development. The Nuggets team spent three days in Washington D.C. with visits to NASA Headquarters were we talked to scientists at Kennedy Space Center and scientists at the headquarters about the research being done for food production in space. On the second day we got to visit the American Farm Bureau Federation building to learn about resources available to teachers to help promote Ag in the Classroom. While there we got to meet one of their policy makers who works tireless on Capitol Hill to help advocate for our farmers and farms. Our last day in Washington D.C. found us on Capitol Hill meeting with our Senators and Representatives to inform them about our project. It was an experience of a lifetime!!!

Thursday and Friday brought us back to NC State to learn from the two masterminds behind our project, Dr. Matt Koci and Dr. Lynn Worley-Davis. The amount of information they shared with us will be invaluable when we get back to the classroom to start the problem solving.
