Protocols: Look for Ants!

Step 2:
Label six index cards with the names of the baits.
Step 3:
Soak 5 cotton balls in the prepared solutions. Crumble 1/4 of the cookie. Place these on their own card.
Step 4:
Place these baits on their own card and take outside.
Step 5:
Record your start time and take weather data:
Temperature, Cloud Cover, Wind Conditions
Place your sign at your site so no one disturbs your experiment!
Step 6:
Leave the baits for one hour.
Step 7:
Take a photo of your experiment, including all cards, even if there are no ants.
Step 8:
Count your ants and identify them and record your end time.
If the ants are moving too fast, you will need to collect them.
Step 9a:
Quickly put the ants in a zip baggy.
You will need to chill the ants in a cooler or freezer for
ONLY
5 minutes.
Fun fact: Cool temperatures cause ants to slow down.
Step 9b:
Take your ants out of the chill and count your ants in the bag.
