We rely on the environment for EVERYTHING.
Everything we do and make to have an easier life comes from
resources
from the Earth.
Excessive use of natural resources causes air and water pollution and contributes to climate change.
This leads to:
Habitat loss for animals and plants
Air and Water Pollution
Climate Change
Injured Animals
Everyday people were getting sick and
did something
about it the pollution!
The citizens of these communities:
Rallied
Held demonstrations (protests)
Invited scientists to test
Met with the government to demand regulations
The 1972 Clean Water Act was a big push for local governments to force industry into protecting the environment.
Introduced rules and regulations.
Provided money for water treatment plants.
Made water testing better.
This big start was continued by more regulations and rules being made!
Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (1978)
Great Lakes Critical Programs Act of 1990
People were getting sick of breathing dirty air, too.
The Clean Air Act was passed in 1970.
Created a system to regulate National Ambient Air Quality Standards.
Set of limits for pollutants in our air.
Your school is part of the solution!
Invasives
and habitat loss are local issues that your school is helping to fix with

gardens.
Local organizations save land from being destroyed and promote
biodiversity
.
People have been saving land in Northwest Indiana for over 50 years!
