REALITY STORE

On April 29 we held the Reality Store, in conjunction with the Duneland Chamber of Commerce, for our 8th graders during their health classes. Students got to pick their "careers" and find out what surprises life holds for them as they navigated through the Reality Store! The students really enjoyed the experience!

" I thought Reality Store was very inspirational. It really taught me how to grow up!" said Jackson Copppinger, 8th grade student in Mrs. Stento's Health Class.

A special thanks to the Duneland Chamber of Commerce and all of the sponsors for making this a wonderful experience for all of our 8th graders! It was so great to have the Store back in person again this year!!

MUSIC

The Elementary Music Tour, after a two-year hiatus, is back! The CMS 8th Grade Band, Choir, and Orchestras will tour the Duneland Elementary Schools, as well as St. Patrick's School, on Wednesday May 18th and Thursday May 19th. These performances have always been the highlight of the year for both the elementary music students as well as our 8th graders, so we are extremely excited to bring that tradition back to Duneland this year.

EXPLORING COLLEGE AND CAREERS

Exploring College and Careers for current 7th graders is also known as ECC.

Students recently hosted guest speakers from the Porter County Career and Technical Center to learn about the programs that are available at the high school level. We are introducing and exploring post secondary options which include

Technical Certificate Programs, Apprenticeships, Military, and College Programs

(2 and 4 year.) Students are also learning about Employability Skills which are skills employers are looking for in potential employees. It is never too early to begin exploring the keys to your future!

Very soon we will start doing virtual college campus tours!

COLLEGE AND CAREERS

Health and PE

8th grade Health Classes will be finishing the year by learning about all the different classifications of drugs, and the latest designer drugs currently affecting our country. We will do a final project researching a drug of their choice. Please ask your child what we are learning about!

For parents looking for resources about drugs, alcohol, vaping, and other substance use we recommend these resources:

drugfreeworld.org

cdc.gov

nih.gov

drugabuse.gov

Talking to your pediatrician or family doctor about these issues is also a fantastic resource. Many times teens turn to substances to fit in, to relieve stress or other emotional problems, or simply because they are curious. This can unfortunately lead to a life of addiction, crime, and death. Parental involvement in your child's life is the Number One protective factor against drug abuse. We recently showed the students an excellent video created by the family of a teenager who they lost to a drug overdose. This video is located at the top of this column. Please take a few minutes to review this important information-it can happen to ANYONE.

A NOTE ABOUT SCHEDULING PE CLASS FOR FRESHMAN YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL.....if you child is planning on playing high school sports we would like them to sign up for a new class called PERFORMANCE PE. This will fulfill their basic PE requirement. If you need more information about this, please contact one of the guidance counselors or jsnyder@duneland.k12.in.us.

You can also find more information about signing up for PE and other summer school courses on the CHS page located on the Duneland Website.

IN 7th PE CLASS THIS QUARTER....."Please encourage your student to make sure they clean out their PE locker at the end of the school year. Every year we have like-new uniforms and shoes left behind. They will need these uniforms for freshman PE. We generally keep the nicer pairs of shoes to be used as loaners for kids that forget their shoes for PE, and we discard the not-so-nice shoes. This is a lot of money to your family! Please remind your child!!
