May 2024

Take a look at what we are learning this month!

MATH 8:

We finished Math ILearn...YAY!! Now that we've covered everything in 8th grade math, we are going to start covering some 9th grade math standards!

We will cover point-slope form for a couple of days. It will take them into the basics of how to graph and write the equations.

After point-slope we will go into systems of equations. We will cover how to find solutions by graphing and using substitution.

The math final will be on May 23rd!

US HISTORY 8:

As we approach the end of the school year, we have finally made it to the most popular topic of the entire school year - the CIVIL WAR! We are currently taking a look at the events leading up to the Civil War. As we continue to discuss the issues between the North and the South, we will eventually arrive to Fort Sumter - the place where the Civil War officially started! During our Civil War Unit, we will cover everything from key figures, battles, Civil War Medicine, etc. This is such a large part of American History and is especially popular among students!

SCIENCE 8

Science 8 students have recently finished up their study of cell reproduction, and have begun their study of heredity and genetics.  Students are currently learning about how to use punnett squares in order to understand how the probability of heredity works.  We are discussing how some traits are dominant, and others are recessive, and also how there are other modes of inheritance as well.  We will follow up our study of heredity with a final unit focused on DNA structure and function.

ENGLISH 8:

This month we are starting a poetry unit before we move on to our final novel of the year, The Outsiders.

It is also testing season, so we will complete our iLearn testing for 2024.  This will be the last time that students are required to take the ELA iLearn test.

We are encouraging our students to come to school well-rested and to eat breakfast during testing.

Algebra 1 Advanced Honors

We are finishing up in Algebra 1! We have one more unit to cover, Unit 8! We are going to cover the Quadratic Formula! We will test over Unit 8 on May 8-9th.

After we finish up Unit 8, we will begin studying for the final! The final will take place over four days at the end of the year. The final will be May 21st - May 24th.

It's been a fun, long year, but we are closing in on the end! I can't wait to see these awesome students continue to succeed!

Biology

Biology students are continuing their study of the module, "Disease" in their biology storyline curriculum.  Throughout this module, we have encountered topics such as cell division and regulation, cancer, and will be discussing meiosis as well.  Students will be taking the ILEARN state Biology exam on May 14.

Upon completion of the exam, students will be doing a short project having to do with student genetic diseases where they will choose a topic of interest to them and produce a pamphlet that can educate a patient about their genetic disease

HONORS ENGLISH 8:

Eighth grade English is reading And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie as our final novel of the year.  This is one of Christie's best mystery novels.  Will our students figure out "whodunnit"?

It is also testing season, so we will complete our iLearn testing for 2024.  This will be the last time that students are required to take the ELA iLearn test.

We are encouraging our students to come to school well-rested and to eat breakfast during testing.
