Knowledge Questions
What is TOK
TOK is about knowledge (Epistemology): Epistemology is the branch of philosophy defined as “the study of human knowledge.” Like epistemology TOK involves questioning our sources and the nature and accuracy of our knowledge in the hope that we will develop a more informed understanding of what we know and don't know. That is, enabling us to become more epistemically aware.
TOK describes five areas of knowledge (AOK's) that one can gain knowledge
(Five other optional themes that are worthy of discussion include: politics, religion, technology, language, and indigenous societies)
TOK considers multiple ways that we can gain that knowledge called ways of knowing (WOK) and includes but not limited to: Language, Sense Perception, Emotion, Reason, Imagination, Faith, Intuition, Memory
Within our investigation of knowledge, we explore and construct knowledge questions (KQ's). Knowledge questions are contestable questions about knowledge itself. Knowledge Questions are crafted with the intention to be open, general, and contentious. They are succinct, grammatical, and use precise concepts and vocabulary. They provoke discursive evaluation rather than any single, definitive response.
We further breakdown knowledge in a particular AOK by considering the knowledge framework which consists of Scope, Perspective, Methods and Tools, and Ethics.
