Jane Forsyth, former GNS Dunedin geologist, orienteer, valued friend, and former Dunedin Orienteering committee member passed away on 4 November 2023. Before retiring to Lake Hāwea, she lived on the edge of this Hereweka map, overlooking the historic Lime Kilns. This map would have been "on her turf". Indeed, when we first scoped the area for orienteering, Jane provided valuable local insights and advice into the best spots for Event Centre parking and Start locations. We dedicate this event to Jane and know that if she was still with us, she would have loved to have taken part.

Hereweka. Mapped by Bryan Teahan, April 2023, 1:10,000. Contours 5m from Otago - Coastal Catchments LiDAR 1m DEM (2021), with few formlines.
Comments from the Mapper; “This moderately steep map has everything; farmland, pockets of open run kānuka, sprinkles of rock detail, kiln areas, macrocarpa bordered ruined stone homesteads, revegetation plantings with access tracks, marshy areas, rock walls.”
This event will NOT use SI Air.
Course 1 will need SI sticks with a capacity greater than 30 controls.
3 minute start intervals.
Competitors must not travel to the Start with their own transport, as the route goes through the map. A shuttle from Portobello will be provided. Follow the instructions in the Event Programme and turn up a few minutes before your allocated bus time.
Grateful thanks to;

The Download will be back at the Event Centre in Portobello. Competitors must therefore Finish, and travel 3km back to the Event Centre to download, via the transport shuttles, or on foot, should you need a warm-down.
M/W10N grade is also available, for those children who require shadowing. Parents who need to shadow their children MUST do their own courses first, travel back to the Event Centre, then up to the Start again, so expect that your children will not be doing their course with you until early afternoon.
This will be another iconic intra-Dunedin event, akin to our last South Island Champs event held on Signal Hill in 2018, but this time on an area that traverses the Otago Peninsula. The map goes from sea level on the northern side of the Peninsula, includes the 315m high volcanic Harbour Cone / Hereweka, and goes down to sea level towards Hoopers Inlet, on the southern edge of the Peninsula. The map encompasses much of the 300ha property purchased by the Dunedin City Council in 2008.
Due to the complex nature of the map and the climb involved, competitors will be taken by bus up to the Start location at about 200m elevation. Courses will finish down at sea level, near Broad Bay.
The Event Centre itself will be at Portobello Domain. Transport will be provided from the Finish back to Portobello.
Expect glorious 360 degree vistas as you go around your course (unless it's a sea fog, of course, which will joyously add to the navigational challenge).
In the interests of fair play, in the lead up to the event, please try and avoid training runs on any tracks crossing the Peninsula between Company Bay and Portobello, in a direct southern line from each of those bays, right across to the southern side of the Peninsula. In particular, please avoid walking the Hereweka/Harbour Cone walkway.
Competitor list for allocation to buses up to the Start are below. Please ensure you turn up to the bus "stop" at the Portobello Domain Event Centre 5 minutes before your bus time.
