FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge is a globally renowned STEM programme designed for students aged 9 to 16. It's an immersive experience that blends the excitement of competitive robotics with in-depth research and creative problem-solving. Each year, a new, real-world scientific theme is unveiled, tasking teams with an inspiring mission to:
Design & Build: Engineer and programme advanced autonomous robots using LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Prime (or MINDSTORMS® EV3) kits.
Research & Innovate: Identify and solve a real-world problem linked to the season's theme, developing innovative solutions.
Collaborate & Compete: Work cohesively in teams, embodying gracious professionalism as they prepare for and participate in thrilling tournaments.
STEAM Engine, or Duck Learning as many know us, has been a long-standing trainer for FIRST® LEGO® League teams since the programme's inception in Singapore in the late 2000s. This extensive experience means we deeply understand the FLL ethos, the learning journey, and how to effectively guide young participants. Our long-standing commitment translates into well-honed methodologies and a proven track record of nurturing confident, capable young innovators.
Our highly qualified coaches aren't just experts in robotics and coding; they are passionate educators specifically trained to work with children aged 6-10. They foster a nurturing, patient, and encouraging environment where every child feels valued. We maintain a low coach-to-student ratio, ensuring personalised attention and tailored guidance for each child, allowing them to learn and build at their own optimal pace.
While we immerse children in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, our curriculum goes far beyond technical skills. Through the collaborative FLL Explore framework, your child will organically develop:
Critical Thinking & Problem-Solving: Learning to analyse challenges and devise creative solutions.
Teamwork & Collaboration: Working effectively with peers, sharing ideas, and celebrating collective successes.
Confidence & Communication: Gaining the self-assurance to present their ideas and articulate their discoveries.
Resilience & Adaptability: Learning from challenges and persisting through design iterations. We focus on nurturing well-rounded individuals ready for the challenges of tomorrow.
Computational Thinking: This vital skill teaches children how to approach complex problems in a structured, logical way, much like a computer scientist. They learn to break down problems (decomposition), identify patterns (pattern recognition), develop step-by-step solutions (algorithms), and focus on key details (abstraction). Through programming their LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Essential models, they intuitively grasp these concepts, laying a robust foundation for future digital literacy and problem-solving.
Children are challenged to analyse real-world problems related to the theme, devise creative solutions, and troubleshoot their designs. We provide each team with the latest LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Essential kits, ensuring they have access to the best tools for hands-on exploration. Our curriculum maximises engagement with these intuitive kits, allowing children to physically construct, code, and test their ideas, transforming abstract concepts into tangible, exciting projects. This practical approach solidifies understanding and fuels genuine curiosity.
At STEAM Engine, safety and inclusivity are paramount. Our learning centres are designed to be vibrant, welcoming spaces where every child feels secure to experiment, make mistakes, and learn without judgment. We celebrate diversity in thought and approach, fostering an atmosphere where creativity flourishes and children feel empowered to express their unique ideas within a supportive team setting.
We offer a clear pathway for your child's STEM journey. After FLL Explore, children can seamlessly transition into the more advanced FLL Challenge programme, also expertly guided by STEAM Engine. From the moment you enrol, we provide end-to-end support, including all necessary materials for sessions, expert guidance for the project, and meticulous preparation for the final FLL Explore exhibitions, ensuring a smooth and rewarding experience for both children and parents.
