Volunteer Scholars is the sponsoring organization for the American Volunteer Service Award (AVSA). The AVSA is a prestigious national honor offered in recognition of community service. This award honors individuals and groups who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to volunteer service over the course of 12 months. Community service hours can be accumulated on a variety of projects throughout the year.
Volunteers may perform any type of community service work that they wish, subject to Volunteer Scholars’ guidelines of what qualifies and does not qualify. Members have previously volunteered in the areas of academic/education/literacy, arts, children/youth, disabled, elderly, environment, food/nutrition/hunger, history, hobbies/special skills, international, medical, outdoor, pets, science, special populations, sports, technology, transportation, virtual, wildlife, fundraising, and more.
This award program recognizes exceptional volunteers whose work makes real and sustainable differences in their communities. This award is certified directly through Volunteer Scholars. After confirming what constitutes eligible service hours, you must track your service hours through a Volunteer Scholars portal.

The National Service Honor was created to recognize and celebrate meaningful volunteer service in every community. Open to schools, nonprofits, community groups, and individuals, the National Service Honor makes it simple to acknowledge the impact of volunteers at every level.
The National Service Honor recognizes volunteers of all ages who make a meaningful impact in their communities. Awards are based on verified service hours in a 12-month period, ensuring every recipient’s effort is validated and celebrated.
These levels match the thresholds previously used by the Presidential Volunteer Service Award. This gives volunteers, coordinators, and organizations a clear and trusted benchmark for recognition. You may apply as an individual with validated service hours or as an organization that can certify volunteer hours on behalf of an individual or a group of volunteers.
Your spreadsheet or document detailing your service hours must include nonprofit name(s), date of service, hours completed, description of service, nonprofit coordinator name, and proof of verification. You can use this sample spreadsheet to track your hours for a PVSA award.
