Weekly Assignments

Both Newsela and Membean are used to supplement the English and History curriculum, as well as to build students' vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension skills. They will be assigned on alternate weeks.

What is Membean?

Membean is a unique vocabulary learning tool that helps students learn and remember words. In addition it enables each teacher to monitor and comprehend an individual student's learning. Please click the link above for more information.

Requirements:

On alternate weeks, students are required to complete three 15 minutes study sessions, on three different days. These sessions must be completed by 11:59 PM on Sunday. Students will only be given credit for 15 minute sessions. In other words, students are not allowed to complete 45 minutes in one day. Weekly Membean minutes cannot be made up.

Membean Assessments and Writing assignments will be done in class each Monday for the previous week's assignment. These must be completed in class.

What is Newsela?

Newsela is an online news-as-literacy platform that features high-interest articles on everything from current events to myths and legends and from literature to science. All articles are available in five Lexile levels, ranging (roughly) from third to 12th grade. Each leveled text features a quiz tailored to that particular article plus a writing prompt that asks students to write and respond to what they've read.

Requirements:

On alternate weeks, students are required to read the assigned article(s) at their calculated reading level, and complete the Quiz, answer the Writing Prompt, and practice the Power Words for the assigned article(s). These articles will be discussed in class.

Newsela articles are typically assigned on Mondays, and due on Fridays, but due dates may vary depending on the unit.
