(“Before and After Art Therapy” C. Malchiodi)
Art is powerful and important. It influences our culture, economy, society, politics and life. It helps the development of a child's brain and allows people to express themselves, but art is multifaceted, and so it much deeper than that. Throughout history, people have used art to record what was going on at the time. Historians and archaeologists can decipher information about the past from pieces of art. Art can even be used in therapy or when someone is stressed and needs to relax, such as coloring books. Many people think making art requires skill and talent, however, anyone can do it. Art therapy is a great example of why art is important in this day and age. This type of therapy allows patients to non-verbally express their feelings through an image or a color, and provides them a creative outlet.
An interview with Dublin Jerome student Heidi Gui and her answer to several questions regarding the topic:
Q: How often do you do practice art?
A: I don't practice often actually, I practice about once or maybe twice a week, and this is probably why my improvement is so slow. The times I mostly practice art is at art class, but I haven't been to our class in months because of COVID.
Q: Do you take art classes or do you learn on your own?
A: Yes, I take lessons. I don't think I would have gotten this far if I had only been able to learn by myself. I would say I'm pretty great at realism and details, but I have almost no patience, so I couldn't have been able to teach myself.
Q: What type of art do you practice and when did you start?
A: The times I do practice at home, it's usually realism on facial features or anatomy and drawing figures. I started art a long time ago in elementary school, and at that time, all I was drawing was mostly anime. Then I began to take art lessons and started to draw more realism, faces and anatomy to be exact and that’s mostly what I practice today.
Q: How has art affected your life and mind?
A: I would say art has affected me a bit since I have several competitions and would usually say it is one of my talents.
