Competititve Writing at Jerome
November 2021
Dublin Jerome’s competitive writing team is not only fun but also good for you. Research at Georgetown Behavioral Health Institute shows that self-expression is good for mood, judgment, and behavior. One of the best ways you can express yourself is through creative writing. Don’t know what to write about? Join the Writing Club! The Writing Club is an academic, school board-approved club at Jerome. Also known as the Writing Team, this club competes in the JustWrite Regional Writing Competition.
Michael Nelson, founder of JustWrite Ohio
JustWrite Ohio has been involved in education and private business for more than twenty-six years
This is a competition held during mid to late January at Dublin Coffman High School. Writers are given a prompt and 40 minutes to craft their piece. Schools from all over the region are judged in this competition. Students who place move onto the state competition in the spring. The best student work is published every year in JustWrite’s publication, ‘A Collection of Voices.’ Two competitors in Jerome’s Writing Team advanced to the state competition last year, and one was published in the collection.
The club meets weekly in room C117 on Thursdays after school. At these meetings, the writers work to improve their writing skills. They address creative prompts, work collaboratively in writing activities, give peer evaluation, and of course have fun!
Coach Trisler is an English teacher at Dublin Jerome
The club’s founder, current advisor, and head coach, Mrs. Trisler says the writing club is, “dedicated to creating places where students can practice and hone their creative writing skills and celebrate each other’s efforts.” The club membership has grown from last year, and Mrs. Trisler says she “think[s] membership will continue to increase as students hear more about the club.” There are currently 25 students on the club’s roster. Everyone is welcome to the Writing Club—no experience is needed!
