Girl Up is one of Dublin Jerome High School’s most popular clubs. But what exactly is Girl Up? Though reputed for holding activities and fundraisers related to feminism, that’s not what Girl Up is all about.

Girl Up is a campaign that was founded by the United Nations Foundation in 2010 that continues to work across its global community of partners in order to achieve gender equality worldwide. Today,it has 5,000 clubs in nearly 130 countries and all 50 U.S. states, with it being brought to Jerome in the fall of 2018 thanks to fellow student Caroline Gross. Its main focuses include equal opportunities for girls in education, health, social and economic rights, with this year’s main focus being on awareness for women’s mental health.
According to an interview with one of its main officers Liyanjin (Juile) Zhu,the main initiative of the club is to give American girls the opportunity to channel their energy and compassion to raise awareness and funds for programs that help some of the world’s hardest-to-reach adolescent girls in developing countries. Zhu also says that through Girl Up’s and its establishments, members get the opportunity to participate in an organization that helps women become educated, healthy, safe, counted and positioned to be the next generation of leaders.
A common misconception about Girl Up is that it's a girls only club mostly due to its name or it’s main ideas about feminism, but that’s not true. According to the club officers, even boys are open to join. After all, anyone could contribute to the cause of giving girls around the world better rights and opportunities. Moving forward,Girl Up hosts a wide variety of interesting activities.
Speaking of hosting activities,Girl Up has an activity for almost everyone. Typical Girl Up activities include discussions, debates, interviews, other forms of communication related to topics like gender equality and mental health, sports,STEM,and storytelling.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic this year, the club hasn’t been able to do or host as many activities as usual, but plan to hold a banquet-fundraiser before the year is out. This eventually leads on to the various benefits or plus points of joining the club.
Last but not least comes the point about the major benefits of joining Girl Up. With activities related to femanist causes and other important ideas related to that, there are many good reasons to join it.
According to their official website Girlup.org,the organization states that through activities related to education, fundraising, advocacy, and service, club members can develop skills related to leadership along with making a positive impact in the lives of girls everywhere.
By participating in activities that encourage and empower girls, female students could develop more self-confidence,compassion,empathy,and collaboration skills, while male students could start to feel more free and open minded,as they could learn anyone can help participate in the fight against gender discrimination.
As mentioned before, one of it’s main officiers Liyanjin (Julie) Zhu says that she encourages students to join this club, because it can teach them to think critically about issues, develop a strong sense of self, celebrate positive values, and step out of their comfort zone. Zhu also says that Girl Up could provide an outlet for fostering a community of passionate girls in a safe and free environment.
