Second grade students will be introduced to a wide variety of critical thinking, creativity and communication skills that will enhance literacy learning. Literature used in the classroom will include a variety of genres including an emphasis on fables and folktales from diverse cultures as well as book series. Students will begin to focus on dialogue and points of view through this literature. Versions of the same stories will be shared in order to allow students to compare and contrast the elements of each including a focus on different authors and cultures.
2nd grade students will be producing narrative, informational and argumentative writings. Multi-paragraph nonfiction text will also be introduced to students. A variety of presentations of knowledge are supported within writing, including digital formats, along with a focus on sharing information through formal and informal speaking opportunities.
Second grade word study learning focuses on phonics and shifting from inventive spelling to correct spelling through the study of visual strategies and word patterns. We will be utilizing the Core 95 Phonics resources in our classroom.
Second grade math will focus on extending understanding of the base-ten system, building fluency with addition and subtraction, using standard units of measure and describing and analyzing shapes. The math workshop learning experience will center around communication, collaboration, thinking and problem solving. An emphasis on conceptual understanding that leads to procedural fluency will develop through the use of concrete manipulatives, pictorial representations and abstract notation in order to encourage students to effectively communicate their strategies.
We will also be utilizing many online math tools this year and all students will have their own ST Math accounts. (Please see links under the Online Resource tab.)
