The primary goal of the Sports Science Academy is simple: expose students to the wonders of the human body. This is accomplished through the study of movement and exercise through sports and activities. Many of the students that are enrolled are actively involved in extracurricular activities, either through school-sponsored teams, clubs, or other physical-based activities like dance. These experiences allow students to make real-world connections to the concepts and principles that are presented in the program.
Understanding how nutrition, cardiovascular efficiency and functional movement are vital components of healthy lifestyles.
Understanding the form and function of the human body as it relates to movement and activity level.
Gaining an understanding why the human body adjusts to changing activity levels and environmental conditions.
Developing data collection skills using a variety of analog and digital measuring instruments.
Developing analytical skills focusing on comparison and correlation studies.
Enhancing skills to work as a team.
Gaining exposure to the wide range of professions related to the health sciences.
Students in the Academy are active in their learning. The hands-on approach of the program mimics many of the experiences students will have as they progress through their educational career and training. Analog and digital measuring tools as well as spreadsheets and video analysis software are incorporated into the program to allow students to build the manipulative and technological skills that will prepare them for college.
The Academy is geared towards students that:
Express interest in health science related fields.
Are interested in the science of the human body, sports and exercise.
Are enthusiastic learners willing to try new things.
Enjoy collaborating with peers.
Have basic computer skills and are willing to continue developing those skills.
Are willing to further develop analytical skills.
Partnerships with numerous community organizations (OhioHealth, Nationwide Children's Hospital) allow students to interact and gain exposure to numerous fields:
Athletic Trainer
Physical Therapist
Occupational Therapist
Nutritionist/Dietitian
Orthopedic Surgeon
Sports Psychologist
Exercise Physiologist
Personal Trainer
