This may qualify them for extra help in the classroom and in an EL room for one or more of the following supports offered below.
In sheltered classes, English is introduced in a way that can be understood by EL students. The teacher uses English at the students’ level. The teacher often uses visual aids, concrete experiences, and manipulative materials. Students have the opportunity to develop the oral and written language skills they need to make academic progress. Students do not compete academically with native English speakers.
Individual or small-group sessions may focus on basic English communication skills or on English for academic purposes.
EL students are together with native-English speaking students in the same classroom. An EL specialist is also in the classroom to support the EL students. For example, the EL specialist may provide guidance to the EL students as they work on a group or individual assignment.
