In Dublin City Schools, we believe that all students deserve a mathematical learning experience centered around communication, collaboration, thinking and problem solving.


Reading Workshop

Reading Workshop is an opportunity for students to gain exposure to a variety of literature, work to discuss their reading experiences, and practice strategies within their own independent reading.

Writing Workshop

Writing Workshop is a time for students to discover ways to communicate while crafting their own unique voice. This will be done in a variety of informal and formal writing pieces. We will specifically look at narrative, informational, and opinion writing.

Word Study

In Fifth Grade, our focus will be on vocabulary acquisition. We will be looking at how an understanding of Greek and Latin root words can help us to decode new words.

Science Inquiry

Science is all around us! Through inquiry-based learning, we will study the major theme of "Energy in Our World". Topics we will explore include:

  • Photosynthesis

  • Energy flow within an ecosystem (food chains/food webs)

  • Symbiotic relationships

  • Earth's movement within the solar system

  • Celestial bodies that make up outer space

  • Properties of light and sound energy

  • Force and motion

Social Studies

Humans are connected to the environment in which they live. We will be analyzing the idea that where we live impacts how we live. Topics we will explore include:

  • Applying map skills to master basic U.S. Geography

  • How regions of the U.S. compare to each other

  • Early North American civilizations (Native American cultural groups, Maya, Aztec, and Inca)

  • Impact of European exploration

  • Comparing main types of governments

  • How specialization and availability of resources promotes economic growth
