In Dublin City Schools, we believe that all students deserve a mathematical learning experience centered around communication, collaboration, thinking and problem solving. We use Bridges as a resource which includes many manipulatives, games and rich math problems. Part of our Math routine includes Number Corner where we count, analyze our calendar, observe/predict weather, etc.

Readers are thinkers! We read in class everyday!

We interact in a combination of reading each day. Students will explore text in a variety of ways each learning day through shared reading (poems and songs), individual choice reading (in book boxes) and with their peers in small reading groups.

Kinders will be encouraged to ask questions, discuss and write about what they read. In addition, they will explore books by a variety of authors, work on decoding strategies, and do lots of thinking about text.

Choice and interest in reading material is very important in growing young readers. Children build a strong foundation and passion for life-long reading if they are supported with finding books that focus on topics and characters that they are interested in, that represent who they are and what they are passionate about, and that they love to hear and read.

Writers are thinkers!

In Kindergarten we focus on 3 types of writing:

• Narrative

• Informational (non-fiction)

• Opinion

We will learn and practice all types of writing multiples times a year.

HANDWRITING

• We focus on proper letter formation using D’Nealian

• We are building automaticity

• Practice at home! Create a writing station or writing bag for on the go writing

In Word Study we learn how to make words and break words apart. We have a list of Kindergarten sight words that we master throughout the year! We work on rhyming, building CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words and isolating phonemes. In Kindergarten, we master the 4 ways of knowing a letter.

There are 4 ways of knowing a letter including:

1. Letter Name

2. Letter Formation

3. Letter Sound

4. Linking a word to the letter

Content is included with reading, writing, and math

Science Topics Include-

Physical properties, motion, sun/energy, basic needs, living, non-living, light, sound, etc.
