In fourth grade, our focus begins to shift from learning to read, to reading to learn. Students will explore many genres including literature, informational text, and poetry. Students will use strategies to enhance comprehension, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication skills. One major focus will be helping students strengthen and support their thinking by providing text evidence. Our goal is to build a community that fosters a love of reading.
Reading workshop consists of a mini lesson, independent practice, and a time for sharing and reflection.
Students will write everyday within reading and word study. Fourth grade writers will also write complete pieces in the following genres: narrative, informative, and opinion. Our goal is for students to produce organized writing pieces appropriate to the task, purpose, and audience using correct conventions.
