In first grade math, students are make sense of problems and solve them. Students are encouraged to use reasoning to communicate their thinking by modeling problems in different ways and use tools to assist in their explorations. Math workshop incorporates communication, collaboration, thinking and problem solving.
Reading Workshop focuses on the foundational skills of reading. Instructional practices encourage thinking about what is being read and communicating that thinking. Critical thinking and communication skills are reinforced to give students the skills and confidence to be successful readers. Students are supported in flexible small groups, then encouraged to read independently to practice these skills.
Students are encouraged to use 21st Century skills of creativity, communication, and collaboration to develop individual and group writing projects. Personal Narratives, Opinion Writing, and Informational Writing are the types of projects that will be created this year.
Word Study bridged the gap between spoken language and reading and writing skills. Focus is placed on spoken words, syllables and sounds in order to support the ability to spell words with increasing accuracy throughout the year.
Discovery and focus on developing scientific skills helps students students to understand the world around them. Throughout the year the class will delve into Earth and Space Science to learn about the sun as a source of energy. We will investigate Life Science and the needs of living things. Physical Science explorations will look at properties that occur in objects and materials and force and motion.
Instruction is built upon the understanding of families, how they lived long ago and how they live in other cultures. Students investigate concepts about how the world is organized spatially through beginning map skills. They build the foundation for understanding principles of government and their roles as citizens.
