Classroom Routines

Math Workshop

In Dublin City Schools, we believe that all students deserve a mathematical learning experience centered around communication, collaboration, thinking and problem solving.

Second grade math will focus on extending understanding of the base-ten system, building fluency with addition and subtraction, using standard units of measure and describing and analyzing shapes. Students will be encouraged to effectively communicate their strategies.

Reading Workshop

2nd Grade students will be introduced to a wide variety of critical thinking, creativity and communication skills that will enhance literacy learning. Literature used in the classroom will include a variety of genres. Students will learn through books read aloud, independent reading, conferring, sharing and reflecting on their reading.

Writing Workshop

2nd grade students will write many stories focusing on narratives, informational and opinion writings. Students will learn to tell a story or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant, use descriptive details, and communicate their ideas to others. Students will focus on writing conventions and correct grammar in their writing.

Word Study

Second grade word study learning focuses on the mastery of the list of high frequency words, beginning phonics and shifting from inventive spelling to correct spelling through the study of visual strategies and word patterns.

Science Inquiry

Students in second grade will learn that living and nonliving things may move and that the atmosphere is made of air and water that move. They begin to understand that a moving object has energy and that changes in energy and movement can cause change to organisms and the environments in which they live.

Social Studies

Students will learn about jobs today and long ago. They will use biographies, primary sources and artifacts as clues to the past. They will deepen their knowledge of diverse cultures and their roles as citizens.
