The components of Reading Workshop include focused lessons, guided/shared/independent reading practice and reflection. This instructional model provides opportunities for all students to learn based on differentiated instruction and utilizing formative assessments to plan rigorous learning. Reading Workshop promotes engagement, fluency, accuracy and comprehension when reading.
The Reading and Writing Workshops are closely connected. Throughout the first grade year, students learn how to do many types of writings including narratives, opinions and informational pieces.
The first grade Word Study program focuses on a balanced understanding of: phonological awareness, phonics, word recognition, visual strategies, vocabulary and word structure. Word Study should increase the ability for flexible thinking to apply, connect, and recognize word patterns within reading & writing.
Students are provided opportunities to build conceptual understanding through the mathematical practices of: reasoning and explaining, modeling and using tools, as well as seeing structure/patterns & making generalizations. The process of finding the answer is valued.
Students think, observe and ask questions like scientists! Concepts include: Life Science, Physical Science and Earth Science. Students use critical thinking skills to: ask questions, develop theories, create processes to test their thinking, make changes to their thinking based on data and share their findings with others.
Collaboration, communication, and appreciation of multiple perspectives and solutions are integrated throughout the following content standards: celebrating personal and family culture, developing mapping skills, understanding the principles of government and the role student's have in our community as citizens.
