In Dublin City Schools, we believe that all students deserve a mathematical learning experience centered around communication, collaboration, thinking and problem solving. Math workshop develops a strong conceptual understanding of math in our first grade students.
The components of Reading Workshop include focused lessons, guided/shared/independent reading practice and reflection. This instructional model provides opportunities for all students to learn based on differentiated instruction and utilizing formative assessments to plan rigorous learning. Reading Workshop promotes engagement, fluency, accuracy and comprehension when reading.
Students will use writing as a way of offering and supporting opinions , demonstrating understanding of the subjects they are studying, and conveying real and imagined experiences and events. Students will learn to appreciate the key purpose of writing is to communicate clearly. Students must devote significant time and effort to writing throughout the year.
Students will be taught explicit, sequential phonics skills in our word study block as well as in reading groups. A strong knowledge in decoding words is essential to developing successful readers.
Our scientists will think, observe and ask questions. Students will learn the important role the sun has in creating energy for our planet. They will also learn about the different properties of matter such as solids, liquids, and gases. In addition, they will learn through inquiry and testing how objects can be moved or stopped by different forces.
Our first graders will study families and life long ago, different cultures and traditions around the world, as well as map skills this year. They will also learn about the importance of rules and good citizenship in our world. An appreciation of other cultures and places will be developed through inquiry, collaboration, and discussion.
