Math Workshop

In Dublin City Schools, we believe that all students deserve a mathematical learning experience centered around communication, collaboration, thinking and problem solving. The components of the workshop involve openers, mini-lessons, independent/collaborative practice, and reflection

4th Grade Math Big Ideas:

  • Place Value Understanding through 1,000,000
  • Addition and Subtraction (with larger numbers)
  • Multiplication (up to 2 digit x 2 digit and 4 digit x 1 digit)
  • Division
  • Fractions and Decimals


Reading Workshop

The components of the workshop involve mini-lessons, guided/shared/independent practice, and reflection. Read aloud will also be an important part of reading workshop.

4th Grade Reading Big Ideas:

  • Reading fluently
  • Key Ideas/Details in literary and informational text
  • Summarizing text using key ideas/details
  • Informational Text Structure
  • Compare and contrast different texts about the same topic
  • Points of view and perspectives
  • Find evidence in the text to support your thinking

Writing Workshop

The components of the workshop involve mini-lessons, guided/shared/independent practice, and reflection.

4th Grade Writing Big Ideas:

  • Narrative Writing (Personal Narratives and Fictional Narratives)
  • Informational Writing
  • Opinion Writing
  • Writing Conventions - spelling, punctuation, capitalization, word usage

Word Study

Word Study (spelling and vocabulary) is an integral part of the Dublin Literacy Workshop Model and implied across the Language Arts Standards. All students will learn to spell within the context of meaningful reading and writing experiences.

4th Grade Word Study Big Ideas:

  • Word Routines
  • Synonyms/Antonyms
  • Prefixes and Suffixes
  • Long Vowel Patterns
  • Figurative Language: Similes, Metaphors, Idioms
  • Greek and Latin Roots
  • Transferring Word Study Knowledge into Writing


Science

4th grade Science Big Ideas Include:

  • Landforms and their characteristics
  • Conservation of matter
  • Energy can be transformed from one form to another
  • Changes in the Earth's surface due to weathering, erosion, and deposition
  • Fossils

Social Studies

4th Grade Social Studies Compelling Questions:

  • How has the definition of Americans changed over time?
  • Can an individual make a difference?
  • What would happen if we did not have a government?
  • Why do we have money?
  • What have past and present people done to the environment to change it (for better or worse)?
