In Dublin City Schools, we believe that all students deserve a mathematical learning experience centered around communication, collaboration, thinking and problem solving.
We use Bridges as a math resource, along with a variety of tools to help build a solid foundation in understanding mathematical concepts.
Reading Workshop consists of books, books, and more books! Through read alouds, shared reading, guided reading, buddy reading, and reading independently, students will be immersed in pictures and words! Did you know that we can "read" wordless books? Kindergarten students will learn how, along with learning how to read lots of words. We will learn our letters in 4 ways: by name, sound, link, and formation. All of this will help us build a solid foundation for reading that can be built up as students grow.
Writing in kindergarten consists of detailed pictures, labels, sentences, etc. Reading and Writing work together as students continuously learn and add words to their vocabulary.
The companion to Reading Workshop and Writing Workshop is Word Study. Our word study begins with the 4 Ways of Knowing Our Letters and progresses through high-frequency sight words, often called "snap words" because we know them quickly "in a snap". Word Study is a combination of phonological skills that we can use in context while reading, writing, and communicating.
What do you notice? What do you wonder? These are two questions that drive our science learning and investigations. We are fortunate to have garden beds and apple trees outside our classroom windows, along with Indian Run Falls within walking distance. We will curiously explore our surroundings in many ways!
Social Studies in Kindergarten is all about community! We will build our classroom community, along with our school community. We will also learn about our families, cultures, and celebrations.
