General Information

Expectations for Athletes

Maintain good grades - You are a student-athlete, not an athletic-student.

Set goals and work towards them - Better times, running longer distances, beating teammates, etc.

Be positive during practices and competitions - Only positive remarks.

Give it your all - Don’t be content with mediocrity. Try your hardest with everything we do! It is OK to be tired and to sweat. The coaches are here to push you, not break you.

Win and lose with class - Always maintain your composure. If you did not like how you did, make it a goal to get better. Use a loss or poor performance as a motivational tool.

Be part of the team* - Support each other. Push each other to do the best. Be involved with everything we do.

* If a student-athlete is a hindrance to the team, not putting forth appropriate effort, not coming prepared or not attending practice, they will be removed from the team. Communication between coach, parent, athlete and the AD will take place before this occurs.

Practices

Bring plenty of water, running shoes and athletic clothing every day!!!

Practices will be a mix of distance runs, speed training, core strength, interval training (distance and time), timed runs, and stretching.

Athletes will run no more than 6 miles a day.

An athletic trainer will be on site. Any problems/injuries must be reported to the coach BEFORE seeing the Athletic Trainer.

Competitions

Competitions are held almost every Tuesday after school beginning @ 5:00 pm (except 9/5 at 5:30)

Invites are held on Saturdays throughout the season. Times and locations vary.

The distance for XC race is 2 miles.

The overall team score in cross country is scored like golf...lowest score wins.

The team score is based on the 5 fastest runners for each team. The place of each runner is the number of points for their team.

1st place = 1 point, 2nd place = 2 points, 3rd place = 3 points, etc.

We will have a few home meets this year. We will be in need of a few parents per event to help with scoring and keeping things organized. All jobs are pretty easy.

Uniforms and Shoes

Uniforms are provided by the school (top and shorts)

White compression shorts and tops under the uniforms are allowed but not mandatory. Many wear these because of the length of the shorts and when it is cold.

All parts of the uniform must match all members of the team, hence the white compression.

Can have stitching of another color.

Can not have any graphics EXCEPT for small logos (Nike, Under Armour, etc.).

Spiked running shoes (track spikes, flats) are allowed, but not mandatory at the Middle School level.

¼” and ⅜” are the most common spike lengths for cross country. Play-It-Again has many used pairs.

Regular running shoes for practice

Nutrition

Every athlete should attempt to intake 0.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight per day throughout the season. Some excellent sources of protein are eggs, almonds, chicken breast, turkey breast, oats, quinoa, greek yogurt, fish, peanuts, black beans, lean beef and low-fat milk.

Every athlete should bring a packed meal with them for every competition. The purpose is to put something small into the stomach before and after a run so they feel comfortable and to replenish nutrients.

Small sandwich or similar item, fruits, drinks (water is best, sports drinks for after races), nothing spicy

State Meet October 22nd 10am

In order for an athlete to run in the State Meet, they must run a qualifying time at a competition once during the season. This is a reward for the top performers on the team. The coaches can award at-large berths for individuals that came close to the qualifying time and/or maintained a positive attitude throughout the year.

Boys: sub 13:00 minutes

Girls: sub 15:00 minutes
