Math Workshop

In Dublin City Schools, we believe that all students deserve a mathematical learning experience centered around communication, collaboration, thinking and problem solving.

Our Math Workshop Model encompasses learning the kindergarten math standards through differentiation, progressions of understanding, and assessment.  All students will be provided opportunities to build conceptual understanding through mathematical practices of reasoning and explaining, modeling and using tools, and seeing structures and generalizing. We value the process of finding the answer, an atmosphere that encourages taking risks, the ability to select appropriate tools, and the gift of time to allow thinking.  The goal of using this method of approach is to enhance student efficiency, fluency, and accuracy in solving problems.

First Grade students will be taken on an adventure to gain a deeper understanding of mathematical thinking, numbers and operations, measurement and data, and geometry.

Reading Workshop

The components of Reading Workshop involve focus lessons, guided/shared/independent practice, and reflection.  This instructional model provides opportunities for all students to learn based on differentiated instruction utilizing formative assessments to plan rigorous learning. Reading Workshop promotes engagement, fluency, accuracy, and comprehension when reading.

Writing Workshop

Writing Workshop is closely connected with Reading Workshop and our Word Study Program.  It follows the same format of having a focus lesson, guided/shared/independent practice, and time for sharing or reflection.  Throughout the first grade year, the SUNSHINES will learn how to do many types of writings including narratives, opinions, and informational.

Word Study Program

Word Study

Word Study is an integral part of The Dublin Literacy Workshop Model and is integrated across all of the Language Arts Standards. The SUNSHINES will learn to spell within the context of meaningful reading and writing experiences. The kindergarten Word Study program focuses on a combined understanding of phonological awareness, phonics, word recognition, visual strategies, and vocabulary and word structure.  Word Study should increase the ability for flexible thinking to apply, connect, and recognize word patterns within reading and writing.

Science Observations

Science Inquiry

First Grade brings many wonderful opportunities to think, observe, and inquiry like scientists!  The first grade year travels through a journey of Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth Science.  The SUNSHINE scientists will explore observations with the weather, vibrations and sound, the moon/stars/sun, and living and nonliving things.  They will use their critical thinking skills to ask questions, develop theories, create processes to test their thinking, make changes based on their results, and share their findings with others.

Social Studies

The First Grade year focuses on celebrating personal and family culture, developing mapping skills, and understanding principles of government and their roles as citizens.  They will learn why rules exist in different settings, how families lived long ago, and why basic needs can change over time.  Each SUNSHINE will participate in a variety of activities to promote collaboration, communication,  and appreciation of  multiple perspectives and solutions.
