Choosing  a Library Book

The 5 finger rule is a method of book selection we start to use at the beginning of second grade. More information about this method can be found here.  This method helps children develop independance and confidence selecting books that are of interest to them. Practicing this skill with help your child become an independent reader.

Our library has close to 20,000 books available for students to read. Children sometimes need extra help during selection at library time. A great way to help your child before they visit is to use on online catalog to search for a few title of interest. Just jot down the author, title and call number
We will do our best to get those books home for you to share.  Please remember that books are due the day before the children have their library class.  Books should be dropped into the book drop outside the library doors. If a child would like to renew a book they have not finished, they can just let us know at checkout.

Library Book Care

It is so wonderful to see how much our students love to borrow and read library books. Every year we purchase new books to ensure that our students have a variety of literature for all interests and reading levels.

Lately we have noticed that many of our love books are being returned soiled and damaged. Many of the new materials are being returned with liquid or food contamination.  Sadly, once these books become soiled, we can no longer circulate them to students due to mold or potential allergic reactions. Children are frequently disappointed because that one book they have been waiting to borrow was taken out of circulation.

Here are some suggestions to help us keep our collection and our students healthy.

-Please wash your hands before reading library books so food and drink are not transferred onto the pages.

- Keep a plastic bag (Amazon shipping bags, large clean food storage bags or other delivery bags work well) in each backpack to store and protect books during transport to and from school.

- Keep books stored in backpacks while they are not being used. Keeping books in a bag in a student backpack ensures they will remember them when they    are due and keeps replacement costs to a minimum.

Thanks for your help in keeping our collection accessible to our students!
