More Than a Feeling: Communicating Empathy

Empathy is often described as the ability to recognize emotions and understand the perspectives of others. It is an essential skill in developing and maintaining positive relationships with students. The powerful impact of empathy lies in our ability to communicate it. In this interactive session, we will focus on four communication skills that communicate empathy. You will learn the benefit of each skill, as well as how to use them, and see examples of each.

Presented by Silja Walter

Main Zoom Meeting

Implicit Bias I: Recognizing and Understanding Implicit Bias

Bias is a naturally occurring phenomenon in the human brain - it’s what you do after you recognize it that makes a difference! Come with an open mind to learn about implicit bias, how it impacts your worldview, and tools for redirecting behaviors towards an inclusive approach.

This is an encore presentation from the Spring Equity Summit.

Presented by Taryn Tangpricha & Christine Wilborne

An Asset-based Approach to Interacting with Students

When we shift our approach to focus on students' strengths rather than deficits, we can change the narrative and create more equitable environments for students to succeed. This session will help participants evaluate student communication and consider how it influences student motivation and success.

Presented by Lisa Peel, Michele Warch, Carey McDaniel, & Dan Kasper

Implicit Bias II: Unpacking the Impact of Implicit Bias

This session will address microaggressions, looking at culture, race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, sexual identity, disability, age, and more. This session will provide opportunity for discussion of examples and personal experiences, and will address difficult dialogues in the classroom and in the workplace. It is strongly recommended that participants attend or view “Implicit Bias I: Recognizing and Reducing Implicit Bias” prior to participating in this session.
