They will have the benefit of getting productive critiques on artwork and the time to go back and hone their artwork. Students will gain confidence through instructional techniques that help students progress regardless of initial levels of art ability. Grading is done case-by-case according to the students’ personal growth as an artist. This course is designed around hard-work, bravery, and fun. Projects will be rotated to ensure students do not repeat what the 6th Grade Art students have done. Those who have never had Art at the middle school level will still gain the basic skills, but those who have come up from 6th Grade Art will be challenged by slightly more complex projects and ideas with a continuation from what they learned the year before. Assessments are based on content mastery and application, while skill is based on personal growth and effort. Art critique, history, and appreciation are interwoven throughout the year.

Assessments are based on content mastery and application, while skill is based on personal growth and effort. This is a year-long course.

At this level, students are expected to have a serious commitment to the production of quality artwork. They should demonstrate a desire to create art and the willingness to explore a variety of media. Key components include the development of new ideas and acceptance of feedback. Students in Art 1 should be capable of reworking artworks and developing the skills and background needed to offer authentic feedback on personal, peer and other fine artworks.
