Ambulance and Infection Control Workshop
Students took part in an ambulance workshop with Matt, an Emergency Ambulance Technician who works for the London Ambulance Service and volunteers with St John Ambulance. He gave students a tour of the ambulance and explained the types of equipment he uses in his work. This forms part of their project on Infection Control and supports their learning for their upcoming exam on Health and Safety. Students learned about infection control measures in an ambulance, from keeping bodily fluids at bay, to the types of personal protective equipment he uses.
As part of the Norfolk Higher Aspirations Scheme, students from Year 12 visited the Edith Cavell Building, where Health Sciences courses are taught at University of East Anglia. They attended a range of workshops including Adult Nursing, Children and Young People's Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Midwifery, and a session on Nursing Degree Apprenticeships. They took part in hands on activities, using the teaching models that students learn with during their courses, as well as finding out more about the courses and careers.
Leaflets on Long-Term Health Conditions
As part of their unit on supporting individuals with long-term physiological conditions, students have been making informational leaflets on a range of conditions, including their causes, symptoms and biological explanations for the symptoms that individuals with these conditions experience.
Operating Department Practice and Cardiology Talk
Operating Department Practice Lecturer, Tony Jermy, from University of East Anglia gave students a lesson on cardiology to support them in their learning as they prepare for their Unit 4 exam in Anatomy and Physiology. They revised the heart and its function, as well as learning about ECGs and how to read them to recognise issues with the heart.
Health and Wellbeing Campaigns
As part of their coursework, students have been designing their own campaigns to promote health and wellbeing. They've focused on a range of topics, such as sexual health and vaping, with creative outcomes such as presentations, leaflets and even a 'vaping bingo' activity.
Friend in Deed Talk
Kelly, Founder of the charity Friend in Deed spoke to students about the aims of the charity in reducing loneliness in care homes through intergenerational interactions. They run regular 'Little Visitor' sessions, bringing children into care homes to interact with residents. Students learned about the charity's purpose and challenges they face in achieving these aims ahead of their visit to York House Care home themselves.
British Sign Language Workshop
Students and staff took part in a British Sign Language Workshop with members of the BSL Society from UEA. They learned finger spelling and basic signs to develop their awareness of different forms of communication and the importance of inclusive practice in Health and Social Care.
