MATH - Grade 6 (Gifted Support)
Course Description: The sixth-grade Math course meets daily. The curriculum reinforces basic mathematical concepts and introduces skills that are essential for all students. Concepts, procedures, and vocabulary that students will need in order to be successful in upper-level algebra and geometry courses are introduced and continually practiced. The curriculum includes the following: Numerical Expressions and Factors, Fractions and Decimals, Algebraic Expressions and Properties, Areas of Polygons, Ratios and Rates, Integers and the Coordinate Plane, Equations and Inequalities, Surface Area and Volume, Statistical Measures, Data Displays. Problem solving and word problem strategies are also an integral part of the curriculum.
Gifted Seminar for Math will occur within the classroom setting for the students enrolled in this class who have Gifted Individualized Education Plans (GIEP). Time during Mountaineer Minutes will also be provided for students with Math directed GIEPs to meet their individual goals. Programming includes support with enrichment and/or acceleration activities/lessons and specialized opportunities offered by the Math gifted-support teacher. Gifted programming also includes a preview of acceleration and extension activities/lessons that further build on 6th grade concepts as well as previews concepts students will learn in 7th grade Math.
Course Goals: (1) To prepare students for Math 7 and Pre-Algebra. (2) For students to demonstrate comprehension and application of the above topics. (3) To cover the PA state standards and anchors for 6thgrade mathematics.
Grading:
-25% Class Preparation/Class Work/ Class Participation
-25% Quizzes/Graded Class Assignments – Units will be broken down into smaller sections and quizzes/graded assignments will be given frequently throughout each quarter to determine understanding of concepts and to prepare for chapter tests.
-25% Tests –Tests will be given at the end of each unit. Review problems/practice tests will always be given in advance and then reviewed as a class prior to every test date. Students are encouraged to utilize the reviews and practice tests to prepare for the actual test—which will be very similar in concept and format.
-25% Homework – Unfinished classwork will be assigned as homework. Reinforcement work will also be assigned if deemed appropriate for further practice on lessons when needed. More often than not, students will have ample time to do their work in class and/or during the Mountaineer Minutes periods at the end of the school day so that if they need individual assistance it can be provided within the school setting.
*All grades will be posted in CSIU. Gifted enrichment and/or acceleration progress will continue to be reported annually in GEIPs.
Supply List:
Students will need the following for class:
- 2 or 3 inch binder
- 5 tab dividers for your binder
- loose leaf lined paper
- pencils! (no pens for math class)
- folder for homework
- calculator for home use
Other Information:
*Homework assignments and upcoming test dates will be posted in the Google Classroom.
*Grades will be updated weekly on CSIU.
*Each student will be issued a school calculator to use in math class. He/she will be responsible for the care of that calculator until the conclusion of the school year.
*Missed Work: Students should see the teacher beforehand if they know they will be absent. After an absence, students should see the teacher during homeroom or Mountaineer Minutes periods to get any missed assignments.
