Course Descriptions

CHEMISTRY I    -   1.00 credit

Academic Chemistry is a physical science taught to students as a second lab course.  It is weighted heavily as a laboratory study.  The course is designed to prepare students who plan to major in science, engineering or health professions in college.  It also gives non-science majors a basic background in an applied science.  Topics include the Metric system, significant figures, Physical and Chemical properties, density, atomic structure, electron configuration, chemical reactions and stoichiometry.

GRADES are calculated using a point system.  Each student's grade consists of the following:

2/3 (approximately)  =  tests and quizzes

1/3 (approximately)  =  lab reports, assignments, homework

ADVANCED PLACEMENT CHEMISTRY –  – 1.00 credits

This course is designed for the highly motivated science student interested in seeking college credit or college placement from institutions of higher learning. Topics will include atomic theory and chemical bonding, states of matter, chemical reactions, chemical equilibrium, thermodynamics, and descriptive chemistry. Students will perform college level labs and write detailed lab reports. There will be a focus on preparation for the AP Examination test which students are required to take in May.

** Prerequisite: Must have completed Chemistry with a grade of 90% or higher, or by recommendation of Science department faculty. Students who take this course are required to take the AP exam.
