Arts education prepares students for the fast-paced changes and the creative economy of the twenty-first century. Learning through the arts develops many skills, abilities, and attitudes that are critical in the workplace - for example, communication and problem-solving skills; the ability to be creative, imaginative, innovative, and original; the ability to be adaptable and to work with others; and helps to develop positive attitudes and behaviours. It encourages students to take risks, to solve problems in original ways, and to draw on their resourcefulness. In short, the knowledge and skills developed in the study of the arts can be applied in many other endeavours.

These courses focus on enabling students to refine their use of the creative process when creating and presenting two- and three-dimensional art works using a variety of traditional and emerging media and technologies. Students will be building off of their knowledge learned from previous art course(s) and will continue to develop their artistic skill. Students will use the critical analysis process to deconstruct art works and explore connections between art and society. Students will also make connections between various works of art in personal, contemporary, historical, and cultural contexts. The studio program enables students to explore a range of materials, processes, and techniques that can be applied in their own art production. A big part of this course is a masterwork series where students create a series of works exploring their own concept and use of media. These courses will also help build a student portfolio for students interested in pursuing an art-related career after high school.
