27 Jan 2023 - Week 0 is all about preparing the launching pad. This site was created as a preparatory activity of the the Statistics 2 class.
SAMPLE DATABASE
27 Jan 2023 - The second activity of Week 0 was about collecting a dataset of our choice, analyse it and describe something interesting about it. I have chosen the IPL Auction dataset of 2023. It has 150 rows and 7 columns. The dataset is available as Google Sheet here
COLUMNS
PLAYER NAME: These are the names of the players available for the 2023 IPL Auction.
BASE PRICE: The base price is the starting price from which the bidding of every player starts.
TYPE: This column shows the speciality of the player, that either he as a batsmen or a bowler or an all-rounder.
COST IN RS.(CR): This column displays the amount at which the player has been sold by the franchise in crores.
COST IN $ (K):This column displays the amount at which the player has been sold by the franchise in dollors.
2022 SQUAD: This column displays the name of the franchise for which the player played the last season.
2023 SQUAD: This column displays the name of the franchise to whome the player is sold in this year's auction.
PREVIEW DATA
OBSERVATIONS
The TATA IPL 2023 Player Auction saw a total of 80 players sold and INR 1,67,00,00,000 spent collectively amongst the ten franchises.
English all-rounder Sam Curran, became the most expensive player in history of IPL auctions with the topmost bid of INR 18.50 Crore.
The chart given below shows how much money each franchise spent.
As we can observe from the above data that Sunrisers Hyderabad spend most amongst all franchises. from the graph below we can observe that they mainly focused on pure batters unlike other teams who went for all-rounders. They spend on batters more than other teams combinedly spend on them (hover over them).
As we can observe from the chart above the auction was heavily dominated by the all-rounders, who were in massive demand. Amongst all the 80 players who were sold 29 of them were all-rounders followed by 27 bowlers 12 batters and 12 wicket-keepers.
Cameron Green and Ben Stokes earned big after being bought by Mumbai Indians for INR 17.50 Crore and Chennai Super Kings for 16.25 Crore respectively.
Mayank Agarwal made his way to the Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 8.25 crore along with explosive English batter Harry Brook who made merry at the auction too.
Pace sensation Shivam Mavi became the most expensive bowler after defending champions Gujarat Titans acquired his services for INR 6 crores.
The probability of an event A can be estimated as follows. We can simulate the experiment repeatedly and independently, say N times, and count the number of times the event occurred, say NA.
A good estimate of P(A) is the following:
P(A)≈NA/N
As N grows larger and larger, the estimate becomes better and better. This method is generally termed as Monte Carlo simulation.
EXPERIMENT AND EXPLANATION
In this experiment, I took two examples for verification.
1) A fair die is thrown. Find the probability of getting even number.
2) An urn consists of 100 balls labelled from 1 to 100. Ram randomly selects a ball from the urn. What is the probability that the ball have prime number labels on it?
For both experiments, I performed Monte Carlo experiment. The detailed calculation part is present in the Google Colab Notebook.
Collect data from an interesting source and populate a Google Spreadsheet. Create a Google doc file and show the calculation of the probabilities.
From above graph and calculations we can roughly say that the random varible (number of goals) follows Normal distribution.
