A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental health disorders. They use a combination of talk therapy (psychotherapy), medications, and other therapeutic techniques to help their patients. They typically start with a thorough evaluation of a patient's mental and physical health, including their symptoms, medical history, and any other relevant information. After that, they can make a diagnosis, and then they develop a treatment plan that may include therapy, medication, or other interventions. They will monitor and adjust the treatment plan as needed. They also work closely with other healthcare providers, such as primary care physicians, psychologists, and social workers, to coordinate the best care for their patients.
