"Open our minds to discover new things about you and the world." - Sacred Heart Mission Prayer
It is our intent at Sacred Heart Primary School, to teach children life skills that will positively impact on their future. We therefore deliver high-quality PE teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical activities that are enjoyable, challenging and accessible to all. We want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness, respect and equity of play to embed life-long values.
PE is a broad subject and requires a planned approach, which ensures continuity and progression throughout each Key Stage and from one Key Stage to another. At Sacred Heart Primary School, we provide PE lessons in a safe and supportive environment where children are encouraged to use self-reflection. We aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities which enable all children to succeed. We want every child to enjoy their learning and consistently strive to give their best efforts at all times and to achieve their potential.
We believe that Physical Education has a vital role to play in the full development of children. It equips them with skills and is central to a child`s physical, intellectual, emotional and social development. We practice a growth mindset approach in our lessons, ensuring that all children understand the importance of having resilience and understanding that in order to improve on a particular skill, you must keep trying.
Our PE lessons provide children with experiences which will embed the life-long values of cooperation, collaboration and fair play. Throughout their time in Sacred Heart, children will be exposed to sport as a participant, team member and spectator, each of which show them the importance of self-belief and the importance of showing support and encouragement to others. These experiences prepare the KS2 children for the opportunities they are given to participate and represent the school in sporting events e.g. swimming galas and netball tournaments.
Pupils at Sacred Heart Primary School, participate in weekly high quality PE and sporting activities. Our PE programme incorporates a variety of sports to ensure all children develop the confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses. We provide opportunities for children to engage in extra-curricular activities before, during and after school, in addition to competitive sporting events. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being.
We follow the National Curriculum for PE and it is taught by qualified specialist coaches throughout the school. This includes a Level 2 Artistic gymnastic coach. Class teachers attend all PE lessons and assist with the teaching and assessment. This is to ensure that teachers remain skilled and are able to confidently take the lesson if the coach is unavailable and also for future succession planning if needed. The subject lead carries out termly observations of PE lessons, looking at the progression across the school.
Children are provided with their full entitlement to Physical Education (minimum of 2 hours) and teachers ensure that no interventions take place during this time. In the Summer term, the children are taught a series of dance lessons by their class teacher using the ‘imoves’ programme. This requires teachers to join in with the dance, which gives the children a positive representation of how it is not only for professional dancers. Children are assessed termly using our school’s assessment tool Sonar. Teachers attend annual CPD sessions for PE, through staff meetings, working alongside qualified coaches in weekly PE lessons, teacher INSET and borough run courses. The PE co-ordinator works closely with the coaches and other teachers who support her in the extra curricula sporting activities/competitions that take place.
PE lessons begin with a recapping of previous knowledge/skills in order to strengthen the learning and make links with upcoming lessons. This allows children to understand why they are studying a topic and how it links into PE. Children begin lessons with a warm up where they learn to develop their knowledge of how the body responds to exercise and the importance of preparing ourselves for physical activity. Our pathway for progressions allows children to begin with a simplified skill which then builds using a step-by-step progression where children practise, improve and apply the new skill in a competitive environment with appropriate challenge. Lessons end with stretches and a warm down.
We are member of the Putney Primary School Sports Association (PPSSA). Through this collaboration of 16 local schools, there is a structured timetable of competitive sports events throughout the year for pupils in KS2 to take part in, including cross country, football, netball, swimming, cricket, rounders and athletics. We also take part in borough wide competitions, including gymnastics, football, basketball, hockey, tag rugby and athletics run by the Wandsworth School Games organisation. We also attend their competitions and sessions which are aimed solely at SEND children, giving them opportunities to play adapted sports against other schools in the area.
Since 2016, Sacred Heart School were pioneers in a community project at The Roehampton Club, sponsored by Rackets Cubed. Rackets Cubed is a UK Registered Charity that runs integrated Squash, Tennis, Education (STEM / Maths) and Nutrition Programmes for local inner-city children from high IDACI schools. Pupils in Years 4 are provided with complementary curricular and extra-curricular support. The current Roehampton club program currently runs 2 sessions per week - on Monday we offer Squash, Maths and an evening meal, and on Friday afternoon during the school day, tennis and Maths sessions. See link for further details - http://racketscubed.com/about-us/
Pupils from Year 1 to 6 also have the opportunity for physical activity during morning and lunchtime breaks. Although we are a London inner city school, we are fortunate to have our school set on 3 acres of land. We have a MUGA all weather caged sporting area, outdoor gym with 8 stations, large trim trail, and KS1 outdoor climbing apparatus. Our KS2 playground is large enough to host 3 basketball courts, together with a substantial grass area. Staff and Play leaders (trained pupils from Years 5 and 6) are on duty to co-ordinate a range of active playground games.
Swimming lessons take place weekly for Year 6 during the Autumn Term, Year 5 in the Spring Term and Year 4 in the Summer Term The two school mini-buses transport the children to and from Putney Leisure Centre.
Year 6 have an annual residential trip in the Summer Term in which they undertake a series of physical and challenging activities, including: assault course; mid-ropes to high wires; climbing wall; tree climb.
Recording and Assessment
· Assessment is carried out according to the school’s assessment policy.
· This is done mainly through observations and sometimes through discussion with children.
· Photographic/video records on Class Teacher’s iPads are used to document some of their work.
· Physical development levels and progress are recorded by the EYFS teachers for each child.
· Levels of attainment are recorded on Sonar for KS1 and KS2 pupils at the end of each term.
· Physical Education is included as part of the end of year reports to parents.
Our PE curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Sacred Heart Primary, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes. We are proud to have been awarded the Gold school games mark, which is evidence of our ongoing promotion of sport and fitness at Sacred Heart.
Within our lessons, children are taught about self-discipline and that to be successful you need to take ownership and responsibility of your own health and fitness. Regular verbal feedback is given within lessons to praise and ensure children are applying the correct techniques. Children become stewards of their own learning and support peers to continue to improve and excel.
In PE, children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip children with the necessary skills and a love for sport. In all classes, children have a wide range of physical ability. Whilst recognising this fact, we provide suitable learning opportunities for all children by matching the challenge of the task to the ability of the child and in doing so raise pupil’s health (considering childhood obesity) and fitness levels. We aim for pupils to improve skills and develop their resilience, teamwork and perseverance (school values). We hope that they will grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
