Early Years

"Open our minds to discover new things about you and the world." - Sacred Heart Mission Prayer

Early Years incorporates a child's learning within Nursery and Reception.

Intent

At Sacred Heart, we aim to provide an engaging and nurturing environment that develops children’s imagination, curiosity, independence, confidence and enthusiasm. Within this environment, we deliver a broad, balanced and creative curriculum that develops each child’s learning within the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.

We recognise that children learn and develop in different ways. In light of this, we ensure that we plan and teach in a way that suits all learning needs; adapting and developing to support every child meet their full potential and foster a lifelong love of learning.

Implementation

At Sacred Heart, our Early Years curriculum follows the Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework. The following is an outline of the seven areas the curriculum covers:

· Communication and Language

· Physical Development

· Personal, Social and Emotional Development

· Literacy

· Mathematics

· Understanding the World

· Expressive Arts and Design

We teach the above through topics and themes that capture the imaginations and interests of the children.

Impact

In our Early Years setting at Sacred Heart you will see each child:

  • Developing their knowledge and skills

  • Being inspired and motivated by their learning

  • Working collaboratively with others

  • Developing friendships and learning the importance of respect and consideration for others

  • Developing confidence, resilience and independence

With the successful implementation of a broad and balanced curriculum and a well-structured, active and challenging learning environment, both indoors and outdoors, children will be able to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding that enables them to be successful learners.

Children will be actively engaged in their learning and will develop the characteristics of effective learners. They will take pride in all that they do, always striving to do their best. They will demonstrate emotional resilience and the ability to persevere when they encounter challenge. They will develop a sense of self-awareness and become confident in their own abilities.

All children in Early Years, will have experienced a curriculum that provides, exciting and enriching learning experiences and opportunities for children to learn through educational visits and hands on experiences. Children will have developed an understanding of the world around them, experiencing and learning about different cultures.

We will ensure children are able to make sense of the world around them, to develop tolerance, compassion and an understanding of their rights and the rights of others in an ever evolving world. Children at the end of Foundation stage will have developed essential knowledge and skills required for everyday life and lifelong learning. Children will be successful learners and fully prepared for the next stage of their education as they transition from Foundation Stage to Year One.
